ATMS, no not the one you get cash from.... Advanced Traffic Management Services is a system that will provide the City with the necessary tools for managing traffic including the capability to remotely monitor and manage traffic signals, process data from vehicle detectors and view traffic through CCTV (Closed Circuit Television). Just like the "Italian Job", although Napster has not taken over this one. :-) This is the Los Angeles County Traffic Control Center.
The Pomona Valley Cities have been working with Los Angeles County for several years on various transportaion projects. On of the most important projects has been to develop the PVITS (Pomona Valley Intelligent Transportation System). Under the supervision of Jane White, Project Director from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works and Hank Hsing, Project Manager from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, they have worked closely with all the stakeholders which include the City of San Dimas, City of Pomona, City of Walnut, City of La Verne, City of Claremont, City of Industry, Pomona Fairplex and the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority). The County has MTA transportation grant funds and will provide the necessary matching funds for implementing the City's traffic control center at City Hall for the remote control of the traffic signals. Kimley-Horn's Integrated Transportation System (KITS) was the system selected by the City of San Dimas.
Server Control The project will connect most of the City controlled traffic signals to a centralized command center located in the engineering division. All the the cities in the Pomona Valley will ultimately be connected to a master control center in Alhambra by the Los Angeles County Public Works facility. This will allow for special routing if there are freeway incidents and will help the traffic flow around San Dimas' main arterial streets and Pomona Fairgrounds during events. All signal timing changes will require approval by the City. The prime benefit for San Dimas will most likely be moving the traffic through the City in the event of a serious freeway incident. All traffic signals will be controlled by WiMAX Wireless communication or modem and leased telephone lines. The County under a seperate contract will install video cameras at the intersection of Bonita Ave. and Arrow Highway. The traffic video will be used to visually assess and understand working conditions on the 57 freeway and at the Bonita and Arrow Highway intersection. Update from Los Angeles County Department of Public Works Project Status The detailed design and system procurement phase is under way. The cities of San Dimas, Diamond Bar, La Verne, and Claremont have selected their systems for the proposed ATMS, per the Concept Design report recommendations. The process of evaluating the existing communication infrastructure in the cities of San Dimas and Claremont has begun. This will help identify the communication needs within these cities. Procurement is moving ahead for those agencies that have made their selections. PS&E is complete for the segment of fiber optic interconnect extending from Stoner Creek to Nogales Street on Colima Road (approximately 1.5 miles). The design for the CCTV cameras in the following locations is in the final stage: The fiber optic interconnect plans are expected to go out to bid for construction by December 2007. The cities of Diamond Bar and Industry intend to contribute local funding to purchase additional CCTV cameras in their respective jurisdictions. Next Steps Final PS&E of Field Elements (CCTVs at various locations within in the unincorporated Los Angeles County, cities of Diamond Bar, Industry, San Dimas, Claremont, and La Verne) Note: The ITS system will NOT incorporate any of the CalTrans intersections which include all the off ramp intersections. Ever wonder what traffic signal control systems looked like in the past....
